After The Elections My 2013-2016 Series Apoko-Lips Began To Look A Little Too Prophetic

Hello internet,

I’m sure many of you are frightened and that’s okay.

I was a little scared before going to bed Tuesday night.  The math eventually made it clear that, despite what the media claimed, Hilary Clinton didn’t have a chance of winning by the Electoral College.  I awoke the next morning and the fear had slipped away.  The prospect of novelty arose.  I’m not saying that Trump’s novelty will be good or bad or if he’ll even make it into office.  I honestly don’t know.  The only thing I know, from experience, is that real change is ugly and I think we can all admit, Donald Trump has been perceived as very ugly.  Anyway after much contemplation, my 2013-2016 series Apoko-Lips began to look a little too prophetic.  Now I’m not claiming I knew how this election was going to play our or what it would reveal, but I knew something was coming round the bend during the creation of the turbulent series.  After all, you can’t have a nation full of flaky people with microscopic attention spans and unsubstantiated mob mentality running riot on social media without some surprises.  Anyway, The series focused on us, our faults, our misuse of technology, and methods of liberation.  Not surprisingly, Apoko-Lips was ignored by the mainstream and I sold very little of the series.  In fact, I damn near went bankrupt, but I kept making the work for over two years because I felt it was important.  After the hopeful illusion of another Clinton Presidency was shattered, it became clear to me, why the series was ignored.

Apoko-Lips is obviously word play on apocalypse.  In popular culture, the word has become associated with the end of the world.  In actually it means ‘To reveal’.  Apocalypse is derived from the Greek word  from Greek apokalyptein “uncover, disclose, reveal,” from apo- “from” (see apo-) + kalyptein “to cover, conceal”

Anyway, we’ve yet to see if the world will end, but I’d say with the biased media coverage revealed and the latest wikileaks, some things have certainly come to light.

That being said, Apoko-Lips initiated toward the end of 2013. I was suddenly struck, then obsessed with pictorial concepts of strange messengers. These concepts came to fruition in a collection I now call the Apoko-Lips – Primer.  These large oil paintings featured ominous harbingers, I called ‘Furies’, who foreshadowed a tremendous change.  Mostly the messengers were ethnic, female, and had prosthetics to overcome disabilities.  The ones which weren’t disabled or ethnic wore animal heads or were being eating by sharks before a napalm explosion.  The largest of the paintings was titled, “Gozer Does Planet Earth” and it featured a misogynistic demagogue spewing fire and riding a black balloon.  A living rainbow with a female face struggled to escape from the balloon and military helicopters swarmed around her head.

I put the oil paints away for the 2nd phase of Apoko-Lips, which was titled ‘Initiation’ and was created with mixed media, photography, and emulsion.  These works  were less ominous in appearance and used hand written graphite messages.  They were a collection of allegories depicting transmutation through personalized interpretation of archaic symbolism.  ‘Initiation’ took a look at contemporary culture, the velocity of information and life lived online through high-tech touch screens.  Eventually, it shifted my contemplation inward.  Actions and movements interrupted by glitch, were emphasized in the 2014/2015 Initiation works as a “Note to self” or memento of the physical body, the external world, and to reboot consciousness.

In other words, it was an attempt to pull the ‘Matrix’ plug out of my ass and become sane again.  It was also an unheard plea for the masses to put their smart phones down for a moment, get in tune with their intuition, and pay attention to the real world.ckirk_thirteen_bExample #13

“Take the red pill or blue pill, or you can take a 1/4 teaspoon of this & release the goddamn’d Kraken”

Now if that doesn’t describe exactly what happened in the 2016 elections, what does?

There are other pieces as well, with plenty of titles that describe what happened this year: “T-Minus 15”, “Burn Down Charizard, Burn It All Down”, “Flying Minotaurs Worry Not While Water Ballooning Young Ladies”, “The Problem With Getting Bigger & Stronger, Is That your Dick Stays The Same Size”.

I expanded the techniques in the third phase and added watercolor.  The 2015 Behold The Son Of GRID additions to Apoko-Lips feature outlandish entities who revealed declarations that could be considered confusing, presumptuous, and vitriolic.  ‘Vitriolic’ is the word I chose to use to describe the statements in the work back in 2015.   In chemistry, vitriol is an archaic name for a sulfate. The name comes from the Latin word “vitriolum” for glassy, as crystals of several metallic sulfates resemble pieces of colored glass.  Basically it’s sulphuric acid.  In Alchemy, vitriol was a motto which meant to ‘Purify’.  Anyway, ‘Vitriol’ is also a word I’ve been reading a lot in the media the last few days.  Perhaps the media, as well as the rest of us, should have read the message in the piece below, which may have given us an idea of what was coming round the bend.

Example #24 “I Give You The Trivium”

Which basically adds up to, listen, process, act, or to put it simply, refrain from ‘Thinking with the emotions’ which will almost always lead to a reaction rather than an action.

Anyway, the Behold The Son Of GRID works eventually led to upheaval and discord in every area of my personal life and drove me to the edge of sanity. Fortunately, change is the only constant and I rose from the ashes as an old bard with epics full of metaphor, monsters, and glory in Apoko-Lips – The MR MIRACLE Mythos.  This 4th phase saw liberation from duality and the return to sanity.

ckirk_twentyfive_excappare_b

Example #25 “Excappare”

Excappare is latin for ‘Take your cape off’, which roughly translates into english as ‘Surrender’.  You see, when Roman soldiers would surrender to the enemy, they’d remove their cape to signal the surrender.  For me, this meant freeing myself from control, which has has made fear only a transient blip that passes on just as suddenly as it arrives.

In other words, it’s allowed me to say “Fuck it,” and move on.

Apoko-Lips finally came to its natural conclusion with The MR MIRACLE Mythos and I began work on a collection of figurative, portrait studies that fall under the title That Which Is.  I’ll let you work out the meaning of that title yourselves.  That Which Is lasted for a while but soon became stagnant and boring.  I decided to make a series concentrating on foolishness and laughter called Kakhati.  After a few pieces, I became stuck.  I desperately wanted to continue on with the series, so I did something new.  I wrote an epic myth, about the size of a small novel, which proved to provide a large amount of whimsical subject matter.

dsc09693

Example #1 “Kakhati”

Kakhati is a word from Sanskrit which roughly translates into english as “Laugh Out Loud”, or in modern times ‘LoL’.  Anyway, Maybe it’s time, to admit that we’re all fools and none of us know what the hell we’re talking about.  Afterwards we can have a good laugh at ourselves.   I think that might be good, especially now.

In conclusion, this blog post will probably be ignored just like my series Apoko-Lips has been.  After all, nobody likes to look at things that make them uncomfortable or doubtful.  However, I’d like to take this opportunity to be a little bit of a jerk, and to say, “I told you so.”

Until next time, I told you so.

Tossing Litter From The Synchronicity Highway

Hello again art lovers!

I hope you’ve all had a great week.

I did.  I took a break from restful days and spent a couple of them hammering out an eclectic mixture of overdue tasks.  The new-found access to different aspects of my personality (A sort of controlled schizophrenia) seems to have major benefits.  Selecting the proper program with the proper function for the proper situation has reduced stress, increased productivity/fun, and helped communication exchanges become more transparent and effective…at least for the time being.

Anyway, I finished up the art work and scans for “The Tale Of Moby Dickhead: A Heart Warming Story Of Life Finding A Way Despite Evolution”.  Originally, I intended for my 5 year-old son to do the art work but he refused to cooperate.  Go figure.  I attempted to have the drawings viewable in 3D, but it didn’t work out quite the way I hoped.  Despite the art not going exactly to plan, I do enjoy reading the story quite a bit…especially when orating as the acclaimed English actor/narrator John Hurt.  Oh, that’s right!  I forgot to mention that as long as the readers imagination is healthy, the story is interactive!

“The Tale Of Moby Dickhead” will be available for your reading pleasure next wednesday, June 24, 2015.

Also this week, A long time collector of my work named Lisa has commissioned me to paint over the faces of a commission she commissioned from me years ago.  She’s become enamored with painting over parts of paintings so I’ll oblige her and paint.  More news on this later, but for now, I’ll mention that I spent considerable minutes tweaking the information on the information page of my website.  Information is now as accurate as possible in current space – time.  If you love to eat information and desire more click here.

In other news, I packed up the pieces of a major sale!  That’s right, a 30 x 40″ canvas and a limited edition Deluxe Set  of Apoko – Lips 2014 prints will shortly be in route to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

If that wasn’t good enough, the mass of art was purchased and will be exhibited by Clay, a long-time friend and collector of my work who has returned to the island to reopen the Seven Minus Seven Gallery!

I’ll post more news about exhibit dates as soon as I have them.

I’m thrilled.  In my experience, it’s pretty rare nowadays for the gallery to purchase an artist’s work prior to exhibiting it.  Clay dances to the beat of a different drum in a lot of ways though.  That being said, the limited edition Apoko – Lips Deluxe Set is a collection of 13 high quality prints and was meant to come in a customized container of some kind.  Because of the fast approaching exhibit, the collector needed the art before I could get the specs for the container worked out.  I originally envisioned a decommissioned bazooka missile painted pink to contain the set of prints.  I’m not sure if this is doable though.  I’ll find out and let you know.

The All New CKirkart.com Is Now Operational

Hello again dear art lovers,

I hope you’ve all had a great week thus far!

I’ve finally finished building a new website to exclusively feature my new series APOKO – LIPS.

For me, the ongoing series Apoko – Lips is an attempt to take an impartial look at contemporary culture, the velocity of information and life lived online through high-tech touch screens. Actions and movements interrupted by glitch, are emphasized in the work as a “Note to self” or memento of the physical body and the external world. The Apoko – Lips series asks two questions. Are we detaching from fundamental components of our humanity with each new technological advance; or are we simply experiencing the awkward, embarrassing growing pains of evolution while propelling ever closer to a new golden age?

New # 15: An Intriguing Nude Triptych

Hello again art lovers,

I just stopped in to share my new triptych titled Apoko – Lips # 15.  This set took a while to finish.  I think we did the photo shoot over a month ago, for christ sakes!  Some of you may recognize the figures and props from an earlier and very popular blog post.  If not, and you’re interested in seeing the pre processed photos just click  here.  Anyway, I really like where the 2015 work is headed.  It’s still focused on contemporary culture, technology and action interrupted by glitch, but with this piece, I’m looking at old ideas and pairing them with the modern equivalent.

I uploaded a large image of the full triptych and each individual section of the piece below.

New # 14, The Return Of Amy Boobies & HTML Hell

Hello again art lovers,

I have many projects in the works but I’ve finally completed my first piece of 2015.  The APOKO – LIPS series is composed of different aspects.  Aside from making an attempt to reflect contemporary culture and life lived through high-tech touch screens; action has been a paramount focus,  well, more like action interrupted by glitch.  Anyway, where movement is concerned, I wanted to raise the bar with my new #14.

Speaking of pieces in the works, the much-loved and ever popular Amy Boobies will be returning for an all new project!  She’s a lot of fun to work with and I’m really excited about it.  I would’ve blogged about the “Amy” project sooner, but I only just emerged from three days stuck in html hell.  On the bright side though, my new website is finally built!  There’s a little tweaking to do, but it’s pretty much finished.  I still have the  site hidden for now, but stay tuned.  Pretty soon the all new ckirkart.com will be operational!

Like Andy Kaufman, He Is A Tremendous Chaotic Force That Causes Calamity Simply Because He Exists.

apokolips_santa_two copy

Hello again dear readers,

Unless inspiration strikes, this may be my last blog post before the holidays, so I’ll say now that I hope everyone who celebrates has a great time.  I pop’d out the image above as a way to visually convey the  sentiment.  As for me, well, I’m remaining hopeful.  Last year around this time, I was in Los Angeles among the Krampus celebrants watching the general weirdness unfold while simultaneously exhibiting art at Copro Gallery with some very talented artists.  At the moment, I’m in Texas, braving the states shifty weather, avoiding tea party members and examining the DC character Bizarro.

That being said, I do most of my reading digitally these days, but I was going through my stash of tangible reads a while back and rediscovered SUPERBOY #8.  This isn’t an award-winning story as far as I know, but the sheer humor in the tale forced me set it aside for future use.  Fast forward a month later, and I found myself scanning my favorite parts of the issue.  The event was timely considering 2014 Miami Art Basil was just winding down and as usual, many people were complaining online about the content of the festival.

I have used the “Bizarro” symbol and mentality  off and on in my work for the last two years.  The symbol is often a backward “S” but for some reason in this issue the “S” is correct.  I don’t pretend to know why and I’m certainly not a Bizarro historian, so I won’t guess.  Anyway, in case you are unfamiliar with the lovable character, I’ll fill you in on my interpretation.  Bizarro is the complete opposite of Superman.  Bizarro isn’t really a villain, but like Andy Kaufman, he is a tremendous chaotic force that causes calamity simply because he exists.

The above explanation is only my interpretation of the character.  You can probably find conflicting information on Bizarro.  With that being said, I’ve posted my favorite scans of the issue below for your enjoyment.  I also posted my most recent piece of art where I appropriated the Bizarro symbol.

It’s titled “The Problem With Getting Bigger & Stronger Is Your Dick Stays The Same Size”.

Take The Red Pill Or The Blue Pill, Or You Can Take A 1/4 Teaspoon Of This & Release The Goddamn’d Kraken

kracken_icon

Hello again dear readers,

I’ve been gearing up for the holidays much like anyone else.  Speaking of, I’m hoping all who celebrate will enjoy their selves and find fortune in the new year.

I’m stopping in to share a new piece.  I thought I was finished for the year after completing “Just Another Shit Head Attempt To Get Closer To God” but I was struck down with a vision for a new painting.  Fortunately for us all, my balls aren’t hung out like they were in the previous piece   I mentioned above.

I put in overtime and worked a little faster than usual on this one.  My son was good enough to pose with me for the photo shoot and afterward, the ideas I needed to enhance the composition visually came at a rapid rate.  I chalk it up to the mind expansion techniques I’ve been putting into action lately.  For me, the piece (Quite by accident) evokes a wee bit of Balthus, ol’ school pro wrestling, and a healthy dose of cosmic chaos to disrupt the monotony.
