New Apoko-Lips – The Bard Sings “Birds May Fly”

Hello internet,

I’ve been so busy, not to mention incredibly excited, because my brain has been on fire with concepts for new art works.  Toward the beginning of 2016, I felt like my long-term, now prophetic, series Apoko-Lips had come to its natural conclusion with the completion of the large-scale canvas titled “Excappare”, but recent events have shown me otherwise.  It seems Apoko-Lips isn’t through with me just yet.  I feel like the time is ripe for this work, but if I’m wrong, I suppose I’ll see it through anyway.

Is the state of the world getting you down? Is all the blatant inversion of reality frying your brain, leaving you confused and/or mentally deranged? If so, this is one’s for you.

“Birds may fly,
And shit in your eye,
And you might shoot em’ down with a slingshot,
Cats may cry,
Keep you up all night,
Meowing outside in the park,
And you may sip your milk,
And if your milk is spilt,
Do your best not to cry,
But if you do,
Just think of me,
And laugh until you’re high,
HA,HA, HA,
HA, HA, HA,
HA, HA, HA,
HA, HA, HA, HA!”

I won’t say too much at the moment, but I’m experimenting  with story lines and new methods to expand on previous additions of Apoko-Lips such as “Behold The Son Of GRID”, “The M.R. MIRACLE MYTHOS” As shown above, I’m also adding a new addition titled “The Bard Sings”.   These exciting new pieces won’t be on my website for a while,

but….

What Can You Do But Laugh?

Hello again art lovers,

I hope all is well in your worlds.

I’ve spent quit a bit of time lately completely covered in charcoal dust.  Fortunately, after completing several new pastel/charcoal studies, I have put the dusty mediums aside and started in on a canvas with oil paint.  You see, I’ve been trying to capture my mood of late and what I have come to believe that it is an appropriate response to just about anything.

Anyway, here are a few of the better studies I finished.  The first is a little darker than I what I was going for, but I like it non the less.

All NEW Painting! The MR MIRACLE Mythos – “Excappare”

Hello again art lovers,

I hope all is well in your worlds.

I finally finished up the LARGE-SCALE painting I started last December.  I operated a little differently than I normally do.  I usually have a major painting mapped out from top to bottom prior to even picking up a brush, but I had very little planned before returning to this piece.  Pretty much everything other than the figure in black and the rectangle behind him manifested as the painting progressed.  I went with my intuition and it felt good.

Anyway, enough about process, there’s a high quality image of my first piece completed in 2016 and a brief statement about Apoko-Lips below.

http://www.ckirkart.com/

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Apoko-Lips initiated toward the end of 2013. I was suddenly struck, then obsessed with pictorial concepts of strange messengers. These concepts came to fruition in a collection I now call the Apoko-Lips – Primer. These large oil paintings featured harbingers who foreshadowed awe-inspiring change. Change arrived, wasn’t noticed until after the fact, and has yet to depart. Since then, the ongoing series Apoko – Lips became for me, a collection of allegories depicting transmutation through personalized interpretation of archaic symbolism. Apoko-Lips directed my focus away from contemporary culture, the velocity of information and life lived online through high-tech touch screens, and shifted my contemplation inward. Actions and movements interrupted by glitch, are emphasized in the 2014/2015 Initiation works as a “Note to self” or memento of the physical body, the external world, and to reboot, or expand consciousness. The 2015 Behold The Son Of GRID additions to Apoko-Lips feature outlandish entities who reveal declarations that could be considered confusing, presumptuous, and vitriolic. The experimentation that brought forth the Behold The Son Of GRID works eventually led to upheaval and discord in every area of my personal life, drove me to the edge of sanity, and educated me, through what I can only describe as “Tough love”, on laws of the universe. Fortunately, change is the only constant and I’ve risen from the ashes as an old bard with epics full of metaphor, monsters, and glory in Apoko-Lips – The MR MIRACLE Mythos.

Dos Anos Kundalini Raising, Jailed, Hotel Surfing, Homeless, & Finally, The New Studio

Hello again art lovers,

I hope all is well in your world.

I have to admit that I’m elated at the moment.  I’ve again, been experiencing that old, familiar exhilaration that comes along with painting. I believe I’m enjoying the process even more than usual, probably because the possibility of painting was removed from my life for while.

After two years of what I can only describe as a mind-blowing “Kundalini raising” experiment, I found myself fleeing my studio, jailed, hotel surfing, homeless, then on my mother-in-laws couch for a spell.  Fortunately, remaining calm in the face of adversity eventually earned a few nights in fine hotels and being able to celebrate Valentines Day in style.

If a handful of body oil cheese cake parties wasn’t enough to be grateful for, then being able to say that I’m now in a new studio, and have began working again on the piece I started last December, certainly is.

I began the piece in oil paint, but it had LONG since dried.

I didn’t want to ruin the work done during the December session, so I grabbed a chalk pencil, then brought out more definition with conte crayon.

The piece isn’t quite finished yet, but considering the glee I’m experiencing, it will be completed very soon.  Until then, here’s a peek.

I’ll finish up by mentioning that during my time in purgatory,  I was fortunate enough to receive plenty of ideas of how to translate my experiences into new art and had a ballpoint pen and sketchbook handy.  As I mentioned in my last blog entry, some of the ideas were recorded as songs, or poems to be painted at a later date.  Others came simply as images.  Needless to say, I think I’ll be working non-stop for a while.

A Psalm Concerning Nasty Ol’ Brian

318166_10150637666229790_1976081389_n

Once upon a time there was a guy called Brian.  He was always mad and usually cryin’.  People were always in his way, he never had anything good to say until a light bulb lit up above his head, and he saw things really weren’t that bad.  He did everything he could do.  He lost weight and polished his shoes.  Afterward, he even made his bed, but the very next day Brian fell down and broke his head.  Out of everyone that heard the news, no one cried, or sang the blues. they all rejoiced instead.  They rejoiced because nasty ol’ Brian was finally dead.

The Police Don’t Bangarang In Imagination Land

Hello again art lovers,

Whether you searched for eggs, celebrated a Middle Eastern poltergeist, got drunk or did all of the above, I hope you had a great easter holiday!

IMG_9803

I took a break from commissions to create a new piece!  In fact, I have a handful of new works in the early “Study phase” that I’m really excited about.  Hopefully I’ll get the bugs worked out of them and the actual pieces created soon.   For now, I’d like to share my latest work.

It’s titled “Apoko-Lips#16 – Portrait of the artist kicking the shit out of cars #2”

ckirk_sixteen_b

The first “Kicking cars” piece I released for public consumption has been pretty popular and while I’m not sure I could ever capture the magic of the original, I wanted to try to create a new “Amp’t up” version.

When my five-year-old saw the piece he asked, “But where are the police?”  Laughing, I reminded him that the police don’t bangarang in imagination land.

The All New CKirkart.com Is Now Operational

Hello again dear art lovers,

I hope you’ve all had a great week thus far!

I’ve finally finished building a new website to exclusively feature my new series APOKO – LIPS.

For me, the ongoing series Apoko – Lips is an attempt to take an impartial look at contemporary culture, the velocity of information and life lived online through high-tech touch screens. Actions and movements interrupted by glitch, are emphasized in the work as a “Note to self” or memento of the physical body and the external world. The Apoko – Lips series asks two questions. Are we detaching from fundamental components of our humanity with each new technological advance; or are we simply experiencing the awkward, embarrassing growing pains of evolution while propelling ever closer to a new golden age?
