On Internet Ghettos

 

Hello internet,

Internet ghettos very often, are one of two things. They are safe lullaby chambers where one will coo while being soothed with only what is ideologically acceptable to them, or heavily fortified keeps where one can rage with little hope of affecting change. I would also add that the Internet ghetto, for the truly deranged, acts as a mirrored echo chamber base of operations from which the user’s image is repeatedly thrust into the matrix and reflected back at them. Desperate pleas such as “Look at me, look at me, look at me!” reverberate throughout the system, add infinitum.  What shall we do now?

What about a holiday? I have always taken breaks for social media, mainly to create new work, but since 2013, the breaks have become longer and more contemplative. It’s funny how clear things can become, both internally and externally, once you pull the matrix plug out of your ass and start walking in the waking world again. I won’t say that disengaging from the system is a cure for all ailments, but it’s a start, and when you reenter the internet ghetto of your choice, either for leisure or necessity, you see the construct for what it is and not what it appears to be.

After The Elections My 2013-2016 Series Apoko-Lips Began To Look A Little Too Prophetic

Hello internet,

I’m sure many of you are frightened and that’s okay.

I was a little scared before going to bed Tuesday night.  The math eventually made it clear that, despite what the media claimed, Hilary Clinton didn’t have a chance of winning by the Electoral College.  I awoke the next morning and the fear had slipped away.  The prospect of novelty arose.  I’m not saying that Trump’s novelty will be good or bad or if he’ll even make it into office.  I honestly don’t know.  The only thing I know, from experience, is that real change is ugly and I think we can all admit, Donald Trump has been perceived as very ugly.  Anyway after much contemplation, my 2013-2016 series Apoko-Lips began to look a little too prophetic.  Now I’m not claiming I knew how this election was going to play our or what it would reveal, but I knew something was coming round the bend during the creation of the turbulent series.  After all, you can’t have a nation full of flaky people with microscopic attention spans and unsubstantiated mob mentality running riot on social media without some surprises.  Anyway, The series focused on us, our faults, our misuse of technology, and methods of liberation.  Not surprisingly, Apoko-Lips was ignored by the mainstream and I sold very little of the series.  In fact, I damn near went bankrupt, but I kept making the work for over two years because I felt it was important.  After the hopeful illusion of another Clinton Presidency was shattered, it became clear to me, why the series was ignored.  

Apoko-Lips is obviously word play on apocalypse.  In popular culture, the word has become associated with the end of the world.  In actually it means ‘To reveal’.  Apocalypse is derived from the Greek word  from Greek apokalyptein “uncover, disclose, reveal,” from apo- “from” (see apo-) + kalyptein “to cover, conceal”

Anyway, we’ve yet to see if the world will end, but I’d say with the biased media coverage revealed and the latest wikileaks, some things have certainly come to light.

 That being said, Apoko-Lips initiated toward the end of 2013. I was suddenly struck, then obsessed with pictorial concepts of strange messengers. These concepts came to fruition in a collection I now call the Apoko-Lips – Primer.  These large oil paintings featured ominous harbingers, I called ‘Furies’, who foreshadowed a tremendous change.  Mostly the messengers were ethnic, female, and had prosthetics to overcome disabilities.  The ones which weren’t disabled or ethnic wore animal heads or were being eating by sharks before a napalm explosion.  The largest of the paintings was titled, “Gozer Does Planet Earth” and it featured a misogynistic demagogue spewing fire and riding a black balloon.  A living rainbow with a female face struggled to escape from the balloon and military helicopters swarmed around her head.

I put the oil paints away for the 2nd phase of Apoko-Lips, which was titled ‘Initiation’ and was created with mixed media, photography, and emulsion.  These works  were less ominous in appearance and used hand written graphite messages.  They were a collection of allegories depicting transmutation through personalized interpretation of archaic symbolism.  ‘Initiation’ took a look at contemporary culture, the velocity of information and life lived online through high-tech touch screens.  Eventually, it shifted my contemplation inward.  Actions and movements interrupted by glitch, were emphasized in the 2014/2015 Initiation works as a “Note to self” or memento of the physical body, the external world, and to reboot consciousness.  


In other words, it was an attempt to pull the ‘Matrix’ plug out of my ass and become sane again.  It was also an unheard plea for the masses to put their smart phones down for a moment, get in tune with their intuition, and pay attention to the real world.ckirk_thirteen_bExample #13

Now if that doesn’t describe exactly what happened in the 2016 elections, what does?

There are other pieces as well, with plenty of titles that describe what happened this year: “T-Minus 15”, “Burn Down Charizard, Burn It All Down”, “Flying Minotaurs Worry Not While Water Ballooning Young Ladies”, “The Problem With Getting Bigger & Stronger, Is That your Dick Stays The Same Size”.


I expanded the techniques in the third phase and added watercolor.  The 2015 Behold The Son Of GRID additions to Apoko-Lips feature outlandish entities who revealed declarations that could be considered confusing, presumptuous, and vitriolic.  ‘Vitriolic’ is the word I chose to use to describe the statements in the work back in 2015.   In chemistry, vitriol is an archaic name for a sulfate. The name comes from the Latin word “vitriolum” for glassy, as crystals of several metallic sulfates resemble pieces of colored glass.  Basically it’s sulphuric acid.  In Alchemy, vitriol was a motto which meant to ‘Purify’.  Anyway, ‘Vitriol’ is also a word I’ve been reading a lot in the media the last few days.  Perhaps the media, as well as the rest of us, should have read the message in the piece below, which may have given us an idea of what was coming round the bend.

Example #24 “I Give You The Trivium”

Which basically adds up to, listen, process, act, or to put it simply, refrain from ‘Thinking with the emotions’ which will almost always lead to a reaction rather than an action.


Anyway, the Behold The Son Of GRID works eventually led to upheaval and discord in every area of my personal life and drove me to the edge of sanity. Fortunately, change is the only constant and I rose from the ashes as an old bard with epics full of metaphor, monsters, and glory in Apoko-Lips – The MR MIRACLE Mythos.  This 4th phase saw liberation from duality and the return to sanity.

Example #25 “Excappare”

Excappare is latin for ‘Take your cape off’, which roughly translates into english as ‘Surrender’.  You see, when Roman soldiers would surrender to the enemy, they’d remove their cape to signal the surrender.  For me, this meant freeing myself from control, which has has made fear only a transient blip that passes on just as suddenly as it arrives.

In other words, it’s allowed me to say “Fuck it,” and move on.


Apoko-Lips finally came to its natural conclusion with The MR MIRACLE Mythos and I began work on a collection of figurative, portrait studies that fall under the title That Which Is.  I’ll let you work out the meaning of that title yourselves.  That Which Is lasted for a while but soon became stagnant and boring.  I decided to make a series concentrating on foolishness and laughter called Kakhati.  After a few pieces, I became stuck.  I desperately wanted to continue on with the series, so I did something new.  I wrote an epic myth, about the size of a small novel, which proved to provide a large amount of whimsical subject matter.

Example #1 “Kakhati”

Kakhati is a word from Sanskrit which roughly translates into english as “Laugh Out Loud”, or in modern times ‘LoL’.  Anyway, Maybe it’s time, to admit that we’re all fools and none of us know what the hell we’re talking about.  Afterwards we can have a good laugh at ourselves.   I think that might be good, especially now.


In conclusion, this blog post will probably be ignored just like my series Apoko-Lips has been.  After all, nobody likes to look at things that make them uncomfortable or doubtful.  However, I’d like to take this opportunity to be a little bit of a jerk, and to say, “I told you so.”

All NEW Painting! The MR MIRACLE Mythos – “Excappare”

Hello again art lovers,

I hope all is well in your worlds.

I finally finished up the LARGE-SCALE painting I started last December.  I operated a little differently than I normally do.  I usually have a major painting mapped out from top to bottom prior to even picking up a brush, but I had very little planned before returning to this piece.  Pretty much everything other than the figure in black and the rectangle behind him manifested as the painting progressed.  I went with my intuition and it felt good.

Anyway, enough about process, there’s a high quality image of my first piece completed in 2016 and a brief statement about Apoko-Lips below.

The experimentation that brought forth the Behold The Son Of GRID works eventually led to upheaval and discord in every area of my personal life, drove me to the edge of sanity, and educated me, through what I can only describe as “Tough love”, on laws of the universe. Fortunately, change is the only constant and I’ve risen from the ashes as an old bard with epics full of metaphor, monsters, and glory in Apoko-Lips – The MR MIRACLE Mythos.
